My
Favorite Flicks
These
are all 5 stars:
Science Fiction
The
Matrix: No flick crams more action, more cool ideas, and more
adrenalin into one sitting.
Bladerunner:
Ruttger Hauer is terrifying as the replicant Harrison Ford has to
take him down.
Fifth
Element: An action flick that makes you giggle. Bruce Willis is
perfect as is Gary Oldman and Lelu (Milla Javovich).
Predator:
Awesome idea--what would hunt man? My favorite Arnold movie.
Terminator
1 & 2: Also great Arnold flicks.
Aliens:
Gotta be the scariest bad guys ever in this one, but Sigourney Weaver
handles 'em. Bill Paxton is perfect as the whiney defeatest space
marine who thinks it's, "Game over man, game over".
Forbidden
Planet: Awesome space travel flick, the best of the old genre.
The effects are unbelievable for the period, and of course there's
Robby the Robot.
War
Of The Worlds: I remember being terrified as a child when I watched
this flick. Just like all the folks who were scared by the original
radio broadcast.
Robinson
Crusoe on Mars: Another great space travel flick. I personally
think this movie is every bit as entertaining as the much artier "2001".
So far, I've only seen it on LaserDisc, so I keep my laser player
going.
Action
Under
Siege: Seagal has never even come close to doing better than in
this movie.
Broken
Arrow: John Woo's best flick. John Travolta has so much style,
and the action is relentless. Best quote, "Please don't shoot
the nuclear weapons!"
Absolute
Power: A fabulous caper with lots of plot twists and turns. I
love Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman both.
Goldeneye:
The best of the post-Connery Bonds.
Goldfinger:
Together with Thunderball, these two are Sean Connery's best Bond
flicks.
Thunderball:
Together with Goldeneye, Sean Connery's best Bond flicks.
Never
Say Never: It was great to see Sean Connery come back in this
remake of Thunderball.
Silence
of the Lambs: Hopkins/Hannibal are an amazingly chilling character.
The
Game : What an amazing premise! Many surprising plot turns. Gripping.
Ocean's
11: My favorite Clooney flick, and a wonderful "caper"
movie.
Italian
Job: None of the actors are my faves, but this movie just works
for me. Great fun!
Thomas
Crowne Affair: Bravo! What a fantastic exposition on the difficulties
of becoming bored with wealth. Much better than the original IMHO,
but then you can imagine Steve McQueen robbing banks for money and
Pierce Brosnan pilfering art for art's sake.
Comedy
Lock,
Stock & Two Smoking Barrels: How the English do a movie like
"Get Shorty". Hilarious!
Blues
Brothers: Great music, a hilarious story, and the immortal Jim
Belushi.
Home
Alone 1 & 2: Perfect slapstick. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern
are comic geniuses.
Get
Shorty: Travolta, DeVito, and Hackman in very funny Elmore Leanord
flick.
Grosse
Point Blanke: A hilarious black comedy starring John Cusack and
Dan Aykroyd as two rival hit men among others. Awesome sound track.
Jackie
Brown: Get Shorty style crime flick. These characters are cool.
Some find this movie boring though.
War Movies
Kelly's
Heroes: How can you miss? Clint Eastwood, Donald Sutherland, Telly
Savalas, and Don Rickles on a WWII caper. Quote, "This could
be the perfect crime!"
Dirty
Dozen: Lee Marvin and an early Charlie Bronson. An excellent suicide
mission set in WWII.
Where
Eagles Dare: Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. The third member
of the WWII triumvirate, and a great Alistair McLean thriller.
Westerns
Quincy
Down Under: Gotta love Selleck's character, as well as the villain.
Offbeat locale (a western in Australia?!??) also wins big.
Pale
Rider : Great comeback movie for Eastwood.
Unforgiven
: A literary Western, and it involves Dirty Harry--you've gotta
love that. Can't go wrong with Gene Hackman or Morgan Freeman either.
Silverado
: Hated Kevin Costner, loved the movie. Linda Hunt is a fantastic
actress I never tire of.
Drama / Chick
Flick
Midnight
in the Garden of Good and Evil: The atmosphere and quirky characters
are what make this flick tick. Spacey is wonderful and Cusack is always
worth watching. Makes me want to go to Savannah just to see those
old houses. Warning: lots of friends just thought the movie was boring,
but I loved it.
The
Year of Living Dangerously: Such adventure. Such atmosphere. Such
characters! I loved it. Linda Hunt, Mel Gibson, Sigourney Weaver,
really a very fine movie with something for everyone.
I can watch
these movies over and over again!
