Half Moon Bay
Just a short distance North of Santa Cruz on Highway 1 along the coast, about halfway to San Francisco, is the sleepy little village of Half Moon Bay. It's quite an enjoyable day trip, or if you prefer, the new Ritz Carlton there has gotten to be quite the trendy spot for Bay Area couples to enjoy a romantic weekend. There are a couple of other stops worth making along the way, specifically, the lighthouse at Pigeon Point, any of the many beaches where you may see kite or wind surfing, and the Bonny Doon winery, which is always a good way to end a busy day.
The Ritz, by the way, has also become quite the destination for tea. We've had tea at the Ritz Carlton San Francisco, and it's fantastic, both from the standpoint of the tea itself, but even more so from the standpoint of the people watching. We made our way to the Ritz in Half Moon Bay hoping to have tea, but we were quickly set straight on that idea by the staff. This is the new new place to have tea, and if you'd like to join in, you'll need reservations in advance, thank you very much. Nevertheless, the bar there always has a little room available, and there are delightful snacks and beverages to tide you over. Our kids enjoyed the chocolate fondue while I sipped a martini called an "Aviator" that was very good. Do give the Ritz a try!
For those not on a Ritz budget, there is a hostel right at the lighthouse that would have been intriguing in my more youthful days for a romantic rendezvous some weekend.
Pigeon Point Lighthouse
Warning: There Will Be Many Lighthouse Photos!
Yes Virginia, that is a lighthouse...
We don't know what the bouy is for, but it's colorful!
I rather like this composition...
A good photographer will stoop to any level to get his shot!
These are tourists with efficiency and a purpose! Hup, two, three, four!
A bit of the wide angle effect...
Forgot to mention, along with many lighthouses will be many shots of the pounding sea...
I couldn't resist this intriguing apparatus. I believe it is a fog horn capable of sounding two notes.
The sea, the snot green...
...scrotum tightening sea!
Thar she blows, and she's a big 'un, Cap'n!
So long, Half Moon Bay...
Beaches, Twixt and Tween
There's beach all up and down the California coastline. I don't know exactly where these were taken, except that they're between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay. We just pulled off wherever it looked interesting, and that's the way you should enjoy the drive. Most of these pictures are just compositions I liked, because they seemed to capture a little of the natural beauty that you have to see with your own eyes to really appreciate.
Whoops! Some tourists got into the picture!
