Top Gun

Steve Elefant, a friend and business partner, recently presented me with a "can't refuse" opportunity. As part of his role as pilot in the San Francisco Sheriff's Air Squadron, he wondered how would I like to hop into his Piper Navajo and fly to the Navy's Top Gun school for a VIP briefing? Suddenly, I felt the need, the need for speed.

Follow along on this photo essay of the outing...

It was a dark and stormy night. Oops! Different story. Anyway, here's the Navajo at the San Jose Jet Center. Our intrepid pilot Steve is peering out the window at us. Solid overcast above. Sure glad he has an instrument rating! Pretty cool plane aye?

Bob Warfield and Steve Kahn wondering if this is really a good idea? That's Steve Elefant in the Captain's seat on the left.

At last we're above the fog!

Pretty scenery over the Sierras. We were something like 1000 feet above the landscape in the mountains.

Disembarking at the Fallon Municipal Air Port, we noticed things are a bit sunnier.

Fallon is quite a homey scene, no? Up on the porch are some comfortable chairs, a lawnmower, and a friendly cat. Inside, there's an honor-system refrigerator with ice cream, candy, soft drinks, and microwavable convenience food. Ah, the charm of a small town atmosphere is inviting.

But this is not why we are here!
